Boreham Wood’s young loanee Lee Angol capped a stunning personal season by winning the Young Player of the Year Award at the National Game Awards.

The 20-year-old, who returned to Meadow Park on a season-long loan deal in the summer from Luton Town, beat off competition from a number of prodigious talents to seal the award at Wednesday’s awards.

Angol hit 24 goals during the league season as Wood finished second in the Conference South, scooping the Golden Boot in the process.

“Overall the season has been a great one,” said the former Wycombe Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur frontman. “There have been a few ups and downs but it has been a good season.

“I set a target of 30 goals at the beginning of the season – which obviously I beat – but the main target was promotion and we have achieved that.”

Angol struck a further six times in the cups before scoring arguably his two most important goals in the play-offs – the second of which came in the 2-1 win over Whitehawk in the Play-Off Final earlier this month.

With Wood only part-time, he trained with parent club Luton during the week, something he felt gave him the edge over defenders.

“I think it mainly helped my fitness. Instead of having days off it has allowed me to stay strong and improve,” he mused.

And it is Angol’s second spell at Meadow Park after spending a short period on loan from Wycombe last season.

“That was a big factor in coming back,” he explained. “It was not a hard decision and everyone has been supportive.”
