Boreham Wood boss Ian Allinson insists every match during the rest of the season is a cup final for his side as they bid to win promotion.

Wood were briefly knocked off the top of the table after losing 3-0 at Whitehawk on Saturday but regained first place in the Conference South following a 3-0 win at Farnborough on Monday night.

Allinson’s side return home to face Concord Rangers on Saturday and Wood have 11 games left as they attempt to hold off their promotion challengers and reach the Conference.

Allinson told the club website: “We know what to expect on Saturday, it will be a tough challenge.

“We need to ensure our little bit of inconsistency is laid to rest. We will build upon our win at Farnborough when we showed that we have a fine squad of players capable of battling for the remaining 33 points available to us this season.

“It is cliché, but we are in a strong position and every game now until the end of the season is our cup final.”

Wood are back on top of the table but only two points clear of a Bromley side with three games in hand on them.

Allinson’s team claimed a vital win at struggling Farnborough to get their promotion push back on track.

Wood made a host of changes to the side beaten by Whitehawk with Brentford midfielder Tyrell Miller-Rodney given his debut for the club after joining on loan while Scott Thomas, Josh Hill and Junior Morias came into the team.

Allinson believes the changes he made helped freshen up the team after playing just two days earlier.

The Wood boss said: “It was important that we did not find ourselves out of the game again at half time. We improved immensely after getting the first goal.

“We looked fragile after the Basingstoke defeat and took that into the Whitehawk game.

“It gave me the opportunity therefore to freshen things up and the changes we made showed the strength that we have within the squad.

“It enabled us to inject some energy into the performance. We earned the right to get on top and now move on to 11 massive games until the end of the season.”

The visitors did not find it easy in the opening half but there was a lack of fluency from both teams after some disappointing recent results.

Wood goalkeeper James Russell was called into action shortly after the restart when he pushed away a shot from Matt Jones.

Matty Whichelow went close for the visitors as he was twice denied by the Farnborough keeper.

But the opening goal finally arrived after 69 minutes when Lee Angol knocked the ball on for substitute Graeme Montgomery to volley home his 11th of the season.

It did not take long for Allinson’s side to extend their lead. Montgomery played the ball to Morias and he hit a powerful strike into the net.

The visitors rounded off the scoring late on when they were awarded a penalty after Angol was brought down by keeper Dillon Barnes.

Angol converted the spot-kick as he became the first player in the division to score 20 goals this season.

It was a much-needed result for Wood after Saturday’s defeat at third-placed Whitehawk.

Allinson admitted: “We were beaten by the better side. We were second best. We looked nervous and under pressure. To be out of the game after half an hour for the second game running is hugely disappointing.”

The league leaders got off to a poor start, conceding after just nine minutes.

Jake Robinson attacked down the right wing and fired past Russell.

It got even worse three minutes later when the hosts doubled their lead.

Sam Deering was given too much space and set up Robinson for a simple finish.

Whitehawk continued to dominate the match and it was no surprise when they netted a third goal shortly before the break.

Deering set up Nick Arnold and the defender calmly finished to ensure Wood were beaten for the ninth time in the league this season.
