Boreham Wood consolidated their position at the top of the Conference South after thrashing Chelmsford City 4-0 on Saturday.

Wood’s home victory took their tally to nine goals in two games and the side are the top scorers in the division with 24 in nine matches.

Manager Ian Allinson told the club website: “I talk about consistency all the time and we have added that in our early-season performances, we also have momentum and a purpose at the moment.

“When I look back at our pre-season, we showed improvement in each game and you do not hold a Premier League side like Arsenal, that’s full of internationals, for 68 minutes like we did or only lose by the odd goal against a full-strength Watford side who sit second in the Championship without being half decent.

“Add to that we held Cambridge United, Luton Town and a strong Reading to goalless draws and it showed me we had improved by some distance from last season.”

Wood should have opened the scoring after the half-an-hour mark when Ricky Shakes sent in a cross which was volleyed over the bar by Graeme Montgomery.

The first goal came just before the break when Matty Whichelow’s shot took a deflection and keeper Nick Eyre dropped the ball into his own net.

Eyre was at fault again when he conceded a second-half penalty after fouling Whichelow and Lee Angol after spilling the ball at their feet.

The keeper was dismissed and Niklas Freund was soon picking the ball out of the net after Luke Garrard sent him the wrong way.

Another blunder at the back gifted Wood their third goal with just over 20 minutes remaining.

A mix-up between defender Yado Mambo and Freund handed the ball to Angol and he rounded the keeper for his seventh goal of the season.

Wood quickly rounded off the scoring when Christian Smith handled the ball in the area and the visitors conceded their second penalty of the match. Garrard kept his composure to net his second spot-kick of the game.

Striker David Moli came on for the final 15 minutes after signing for the club.

Moli started off at Liverpool as a youngster before signing a professional contract at Wolves two years ago. He had a loan spell at Meadow Park last year and has signed after being released by the Championship club.

The league leaders face a difficult trip to fifth-placed Basingsatoke Town this weekend.
