Interim Arsenal Ladies manager John Bayer says the players have made his job ‘easy’ since succeeding Shelley Kerr as Gunners boss.

Kerr stepped down from her role of 16 months following the 2-0 victory over Everton in the Women’s FA Cup final, with Bayer taking up the role until a replacement is appointed.

Since coming into the breach to succeed Kerr, Bayer has enjoyed a 100 per cent win record, overseeing two wins from as many games.

A 1-0 victory over Liverpool Ladies in the FA Women’s Super League a fortnight ago was followed up with a 3-0 defeat of Chelsea Ladies in the Continental Cup at Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park last weekend. Kelly Smith bagged a brace and Shinobu Ohno added the third.

And Bayer, who is technical director of Arsenal’s centre of excellence, says the players have taken to his methods and ideas immediately, making his life significantly easier.

“It’s been great. Everyone was sad to see Shelley go but the club’s got good infrastructure.

“The building blocks are all there, so it was just a question of coming in, taking over training, picking the team, all the things a manager usually does.

“So it’s been very easy, the players have been absolutely great, they’ve taken to what I’ve tried to do with them and worked hard.”

Outgoing manager Kerr had already announced her intention to resign prior to the Smith-inspired win over the Toffees and Bayer paid tribute to his predecessor.

“Shelley finished with the cup final and then of course the players had about a ten-day break because of international duties and obviously Arsenal have a lot of players away at international camps.

“It wasn’t actually until the week before the Liverpool game that I could start work with them because we had a good few players away.

“Effectively we had three training sessions to prepare for the Liverpool game.

“So it was fortunate in a way, the break, as in we didn’t have a midweek game straight after the cup final or anything like that.

“I think Shelley may have well taken that into account when she decided when to go, typically of her she wouldn’t leave the club in the lurch.”

The Gunners are in Continental Cup action this weekend.

They hosted London Bees yesterday evening [Thursday] and travel across Londons to Millwall Lionesses on Sunday afternoon.
