Arsenal Ladies manager Shelley Kerr celebrated winning the FA Women’s Cup in her final game in charge.

The Gunners, who play their home games in Borehamwood, clinched the trophy for the 13th time after a 2-0 win over Everton at Stadium mk on Sunday.

Kerr told the club website: “I’m absolutely thrilled.

“We thoroughly deserved this. I’ve seen it all along, even when people have been writing us off I know how talented we are and you’ve seen that today. It probably could have been more than two today.

“The players have been magnificent and that’s something that I’m really going to miss because I’ve had the pleasure of working with such a fantastic group of talented players.

“I think this was a message for everyone out there how good this team are.”

More than 15,000 fans attended the match between the 2013 winners Arsenal and Everton.

The Toffees had a great opportunity to open the scoring early on but Nikita Parris blasted her effort over the bar.

Arsenal responded and went agonisingly close through Rachel Yankey but her strike struck the post.

But Kerr’s side took the lead in the 15th minute when Kelly Smith curled a 20-yard free-kick into the net for her sixth FA Cup final goal.

Danielle Carter nearly doubled the lead before the break but her header was kept out by keeper Rachel Brown-Finnis.

Arsenal, who are bottom of the Super League, hit the woodwork again in the second half when Smith’s strike struck the post.

But the second goal arrived just after the hour mark when Gabby George laid the ball off to Yukari Kinga to tuck home a low shot.

Smith told the club website: “I am really thrilled for everybody, especially Shelley in her last game. We dug it out, we grinded, we worked hard and got the rewards in the end.

“We have been waiting for that. Our league performances haven’t been up to scratch and we know that.

“We knew coming into this game that we needed to pull out a big performance and we certainly did that.”
