Boreham Wood enjoyed a successful week beating play-off candidates Ebbsfleet United before knocking Watford out of the Herts Senior Cup.

Wood’s 2-1 victory against Ebbsfleet may have gone against the Conference South league table, but an excellent defensive performance ensured the club moved up to 14th, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

Their first strike came with an air of fortune after an own goal from Ebbsfleet’s Michael Thalassitis’ attempted clearance, following a Greg Morgan free-kick.

Boreham Wood looked threatening at set pieces and Callum Reynolds almost doubled their lead, firing wide at the far post.

Boreham Wood’s lead doubled just two minutes into the second half.

Lee Angol capitalised on a Wood clearance to control and then lob the oncoming keeper for his first goal for the club. Ebbsfleet pressed for a way back into the match, but strong defending was sufficient to deny them. But in the 90th minute substitute Billy Bricknell arrived late at the far post of a lofted cross to get his name on the scoresheet.

Outside of the league, Wood knocked out a youthful Watford side in the quarter-final of the Herts Senior Cup.

Wood’s Junior Morias opened the scoring with a screamer from the 30 yards. The goal is the striker’s eighth in as many games.

Matty Whichelow then put the match out the reach of his former employers, curling an effort past goalkeeper Dan Wilks.

Wood manager Ian Allinson told the club website: “We have not won any silverware for some time, and this particular cup has eluded us in recent seasons.

“We are relatively safe in the league, so we are going for this and having got this far I want to be in the final.”

Wood play their semi-final tie against Hitchin Town this evening. The winner will face Bishop’s Stortford in the final.

Wood’s next league match will see them travel to Dover this weekend, who sit just one place behind their Ebbsfleet in the Skrill Conference South.

Allinson added: “Silverware has taken a precedent this week with two games in 48 hours, but that should not distract from our progress in the league.

“We may well have already done most of the hard work in terms of survival, but we still need at least one win and soon to be sure.

“There will be tired legs and we may have to adapt our game plan to get something from this game.”

Wood have got a decent record at Crabble where they have won on their last two visits.

Allinson’s side are unbeaten in the last three years against Dover and their meeting earlier this season resulted in an entertaining 2-2 draw at Meadow Park.

Dover are currently in a battle to finish in the play-off spots sitting in fifth position.
