Tabard crashed to a comprehensive 62-3 home defeat to Luton in London League One North last weekend.

The hosts played most of the game in the opposition half and enjoyed more than their fair share of possession but unusually their defence proved fragile. Luton found that their counter attacks and strategic use of probing kicks brought them ten tries and Tabard were left wondering how to get back to winning ways.

Tabard had performed well away at Luton earlier on in the campaign and approached this game with a certain amount of confidence. From the first scrum it looked as though Tabard were going to have a decent game with the front five pushing Luton off their own ball.

The home side carried on applying pressure but no scores came and when the ball was lost, Luton kicked ahead, gathered the ball and touched down for their first try which was claimed by centre Steve Ellis.

Four minutes later with a Luton scrum in the Tabard half for the first time, the ball was kicked through a gaping hole in the defence and Luton centre Rik Hobbs touched down for an easy try with stand off Talanoa converting.

A penalty by Tabard fly-half Jack Reilly brought them three points but this was to be their only success with Luton continuing to score from counter attacks. From another scrum, full-back Tom Mahendran crossed over before the ball was kicked through again and wing Tom Wilmore scored.

Wilmore then repeated the move with another kick ahead which Talanoa converted and this gave the visitors a commanding 29-3 lead at the break.

The second half was much the same, with Tabard having the possession and territory but falling foul of the Luton counter attacks.

Luton ran in five tries with flanker Mike Western, Mahendran, Harris (two) and Wilmore all crossing the line. Talanoa converted four and Tabard found themselves on the end of their heaviest defeat for a long time.

Tabard will look to get back on track this weekend with a trip to Letchworth.
