Tabard hit by heavy Ruislip defeat
3:30pm Friday 20th September 2013 in Sport
Tabard slumped to a 53-14 defeat at Ruislip in London League One North.
The visitors started the game in a positive mood but they allowed the Ruislip runners far too much space as the game wore on.
The match started tentatively but Tabard quickly settled into their forward game and were able to put early pressure on Ruislip. This led to Tabard opening the scoring when number eight Scott Stoba touched down following a forward drive after just eight minutes. Tabard then stretched their lead when Ruislip were caught offside and fly-half Jack Reilly kicked the penalty.
Ruislip fought back with a penalty of their own before their fleet footed wing managed to race clear and score a converted try.
The away side replied with another Reilly penalty to put Tabard within one point.
But Ruislip were able to take advantage of Tabard being temporarily down to 14 men, from a yellow card, with another try before half-time. This gave the hosts a 17-11 lead heading into the second period.
The contest looked to be nicely poised, especially when another Reilly penalty narrowed the gap but this turned out to be Tabard’s last score. With Ruislip playing downhill and some very tidy three-quarters coupled to Tabard playing a different defensive strategy, this meant there were too many gaps in the visiting side.
Ruislip exploited this ruthlessly with six more tries. The first came from a lineout drive before the hosts broke away to score.
It was a pretty disappointing finish to the game for the visitors as they ended up well beaten.
Tabard will look to respond this weekend when they return home to face Woodford.
