Radlett's title party put on hold
3:30pm Friday 23rd August 2013 in Sport
Radlett’s title celebrations were temporarily delayed after Letchworth defeated the Home Counties Division Two East leaders by 52 runs.
Some midweek rain ensured the wicket at Cobden Hill bore little resemblance to the one which hosted Middlesex and Yorkshire in the YB40 earlier this year.
Kabir Toor, stand in skipper for Radlett, gave the home side the first chance to do some damage on this green surface.
As expected, Stuart Browne was unplayable once again (0-14 off 10 overs). Put him on a green top and the man knows no equal.
Unfortunately, he didn’t get much support from the other end as the hosts provided a remarkable spread of buffet bowling for Letchworth’s batsmen to gorge themselves on.
Radlett were never able to claw back the lost ground early on in the innings and, despite some resurgence could only restrict the visitors to 213 – well over par on what was a difficult wicket.
In reply, the prolific Toor and Fraser Crawford provided the usual solid base, guiding the home side to 131 for one.
The game looked won and a league winning party was poised to commence. But some good bowling and a lot of bad batting then intervened as Radlett crumbled to 161 all out.
Letchworth played themselves out of a tight spot to secure the win and make the Cobden Hill faithful wait one more week for the celebrations to begin at Knebworth Park tomorrow [Saturday].
