Shenley Village 124
Potton Town 125-5
Herts Division Four
Shenley slumped to the bottom of the table despite a creditable performance against table toppers Potton Town on Saturday.
With six players missing, the resources at the club were stretched to the limit but the players drafted in from the second team all played well.
Shenley got off to the worse possible start after losing the toss and being asked to bat.
Skipper Steve Scott was bowled the first ball he faced. However, this brought Chris Doyle (25) to the crease and, together with St John Fuller (35), a sterling effort produced 56 for the second wicket.
After they departed, the only other batsmen to reach double figures were Dave Stubbs (11) and Ed Lilywhite (29). Shenley's innings closed on 124 in the 49th over which was a magnificent effort against the best bowling attack in the league.
Potton started their innings positively and anything off length or line went to the boundary.
Scott took an early wicket, with wicket keeper Mark Perkins taking a fine catch low to his left.
Tim Leathers was unlucky to take only one wicket as the left arm spinner repeatedly beat the bat.
Matt Woodward picked up 2 for 4 before Potton reached their target in just 17 overs for the loss of five wickets.
SHENLEY: Scott, Fuller, Doyle, Stubbs, Lilywhite, Perkins, Leathers, Shadbolt, Woodward, Tunstall.
A poor batting performance ended the 2nd XI's chances of grabbing anything from their match against the same opposition.
Only Danny Manzi (18), who stood firm at the crease for 35 overs, managed to provide any sort of resistance to the Potton attack. Only 93 runs were on the board as Shenley's final wicket tumbled.
Potton's swashbuckling batting was only briefly halted in the 11th over with a wicket from Ray McLennon, who had two further chances dropped. The target was easily reached in the 21st over.
