Villagers Go Close

Shenley Village 189-7

Hertford 180-9

Hertfordshire Division Four

Shenley are still looking for their first win of the season after a nailbiting encounter with high-flying Hertford on Saturday.

With just one over left in the game, Hertford needed ten runs to win with two wickets in hand.

No runs had been added to their score when Haley had the number 9 caught behind by Kemp. The next batsman came out and survived the final delivery to earn his side a draw.

This was yet another occasion when the Villagers have literally let victory slip from their grasp.

Shenley won the toss and elected to bat. Openers Stanley (17) and Cashin (25) put on 31 for the first wicket.

Following the departure of Stanley, Searle entered the fray and started slowly.

He went on to make 29, and was soon joined back in the pavilion by Cashin, who was run out.

McDonald joined Searle and together they put on 41 runs for the third wicket.

Two more wickets fell quickly, leaving Shenley on 120 for 5.

Lewis began to pick up the tempo and, with new partner Scott, put on 49 in seven overs. Captain Scott departed for 36 and Lewis soon followed for 18.

It was left to Lilywhite and Haley to take the total to 189 for 7 off 53 overs.

Haley and Shadbolt opened the attack for Shenley and had to work hard to create chances. Unfortunately, those created were not taken until Shadbolt had Spring caught by Haley for 18. That was the only wicket to fall for 28 overs, and Hertford advanced to 133 for one.

But then a tactical decision by Scott changed his side's flagging fortunes. He introduced Searle into the attack, and the move paid instant dividends.

Opener Barnes was removed for 64, and no other Hertford player was able to reach double figures as Searle and Haley cut loose to reduce the opposition to 179 for 8 with two overs remaining.

Searle then bowled a maiden over to set up the frantic finale.
