Points Fine Rubs It In For Village

12:00am Saturday 1st January 2000

Shenley Village 173-7

Potton Town 177-6

Hertfordshire League Division Four

Shenley are still looking for their first success of the season after losing a tight affair to Potton Town on Saturday.

And to make matters worse for the Villagers, they were deducted five points by the league for failing to get their result in on time.

The result leaves Shenley just eight points above bottom-placed Letchworth.

Having lost the toss and being put in to bat, Shenley were given a solid start by Stanley (18) and Cashin (21).

McDonald then joined Cashin and scored 22 before being run out.

Following the departure of Cashin, who was bowled, captain Steve Scott entered the fray and made 16.

But just like those who had departed before him, Worsnop (16) was dismissed just when it looked as though he was getting into a comfortable rhythm.

The demise of Worsnop brought Fred Kemp to the crease with the score at 105 for 5.

Kemp smashed the ball to all areas of the ground and after the fall of the sixth wicket was joined by Churaman.

The duo went on to form a valuable 63-run partnership, taking the total to 173 for 7 off 53 overs.

Scott (2 for 30) and Shadbolt opened Shenley's bowling and were unlucky not to claim more than a couple of wickets.

Two catches were dropped and numerous other mishits failed to carry to fielders.

Potton's number three took full advantage and went on to make 56 before being bowled out by McDonald (3 for 59).

It was left to the opposition's lower order to swing the game in their side's favour, and they safely reached a winning total of 177 for 6.

Shenley will be looking to claim their first scalp of the season when they entertain fourth-placed Knebworth Park this Saturday.

SHENLEY: Stanley, Cashin, McDonald, Scott, Worsnop, Kemp, Woodward, Churaman, Webb, Shadbolt, Feelack.

* The 2nd string lost to the same opposition and started the match in kamikaze fashion.

Three wickets had fallen by the ninth over and only 19 runs were on the board.

Tony Munting (53) and Dave Stubbs spent eight overs together at the crease and then Steve Phillips (25) joined Muntins for a 43-partnership.

Shenley were eventually dismissed for 48 overs.

The opposition's opener was dropped twice in consecutive overs which proved costly as he went on to score 50 runs.

At 83 for 5, Shenley were still in the hunt but Potton managed to reach their target without losing any further wickets.

Shenley beat All Out by 47 runs in a match played on Sunday.

The match was reduced to 35 overs and Shenley were asked to bat.

A first wicket stand of 113 was reached by Searle (43) and Doyle (61).

Leslie (11), Scott-Barratt (38 not out) and Davenell (three not out) helped their side reach 190 for 3.

All Out were soon in trouble as Shadbolt (2 for 11) and Roseman (2 for 32) bowled effectively.

Two big-hitting batsmen managed to take their score to 98 for 3 but Davenell (2 for 6) assisted in reducing the opposition to 143 for 9 at the close of play.
