Laurie in top gear

Shenley Village II 174-6

Welwyn Garden City IV 254-8 dec

Herts Cricket League Division Ten

The Villagers put their recent defeat by Hexton behind them on Saturday afternoon thanks to a draw with Welwyn.

Visitors Welwyn lost the toss and were put in to bat. A superb innings enabled them to declare on 254-8. However, Shenley managed to capture a handful of wickets, with Laurie Willingham proving to be the most dynamic bowler, taking two in his second spell.

Shenley's reply started at a breakneck pace, with more than six runs per over being the order of the day.

However, this came to a shuddering halt when Barry Cashin, not playing his usual disciplined approach, was bowled for 23 in the sixth over.

He was followed in the next over by Justin Geary, whose suicidal swing resulted in his removal for nought. This had the cumulative effect of leaving the Villagers on 44-2 after ten overs.

Mick Hardaker and Gary Burkhardt were Shenley's next partnership. They made it to the 20th over, though the scoring rate was trailing at 70-2.

The rot was finally stopped when Tony Munting (18) and man-of-the-match Laurie Willingham (44no) teamed up to push the total to 132-5 by the 40th over.

Unfortunately, by this stage, victory was a rapidly diminishing dot on the horizon, so Shenley's only option was to concentrate on achieving a draw, and batting points.

The Villagers eventually managed this aim, and gained three batting points in the process.Laurie in top gearShenley Village II 174-6
