Sawbridgeworth III 190-3
Herts Cricket League
Division Ten
The Villagers' opening match of the new season on Saturday saw them put up a valiant struggle against powerful Sawbridgeworth.
Shenley lost the toss and were first to bat on a firm wicket. Openers Dave Stubbs and Barry Cashin, making his return to the club after a few years' absence, started cautiously. Though this approach paid off as they built the score to 46 off 20 overs.
After Stubbs was out lbw, Bob Sangaram (11) stepped in and racked up a 30-run partnership with Cashin.
Skipper Tony Munting made a brief appearance, lasting only one ball, as he was bowled off his legs. Though things picked up when Dave Affleck joined Cashin.
For the next 21 overs Cashin kept the scorers busy with a fantastic sequence of boundaries. On-fire Cashin finished the innings on 115no, alongside Affleck (24no) in a partnership of 106.
The Villagers were helped toward their total of 187-3 thanks to 26 extras from Sawbridgeworth's rather poor wicket keeper.
Feeling secure, the Villagers started bowling enthusiastically, but rather inaccurately.
As a result, it was not until the 22nd over that Shenley struck through Munting, with a lbw, when the score was on 88. He struck again with a lbw when the score was 170.
A good second spell by Frank Lillywhite produced an extra point for Shenley, but Sawbridgeworth were never in danger of losing.
This was illustrated by a drive to the cover boundary which took them to 190-3 with 8.5 overs to spare.
Shenley Village first XI's match at Reed II was cancelled.
