In response to the letter ‘Centre must be open to all’ (Your Views, July 8) regarding the closure of Three Ways Community Centre, I have emailed the council the below with no reply (surprise surprise). Maybe this letter will prompt a response?

Will the council be asking the community what they think? How can the general public voice their opinions? Will the opinions and views from said public be listened to or has a decision already been made?

Having seen the comments posted on the Borehamwood & Elstree Times website I believe there is a strong backing from people to keep this centre as it is — please note some of these are not from Borehamwood, nor are they all drinkers? Plus there is a Facebook page with about 300 members who are outraged that “our” council wishes to turn the Three Ways into another community hall, like Aberford, Allum Lane and Fairway Hall to stand empty or unable to be used due to price. These halls do not have a bar, however. Do they generate money like the current Three Ways hall?

Where is the money coming from to refurbish the hall? I can think of more desperate causes in need of a “makeover” to spend taxpayers’ money on.

I am deeply disgusted by the council’s actions and ignorance of the general public’s views on closing the bar of this great establishment. My family is disappointed that the money raised by our ancestors by paying “penny for a brick” back in the early Sixties to create a venue like the Three Ways is being changed from the original plan for the venue. Does the council even understand what this places stands for?

It’s for people of all ages to get together, from OAPS to young families. Limiting the time they can spend together as groups is ridiculous, it raises money and awareness for charities during the many charity nights which have been held here, it also provides an affordable venue for parties, weddings, christenings etc.

To lose this place with the bar will have a massive impact on many lives of people within Borehamwood — where will people go? It has a great future as it is and is an opportunity for growth in profits which I am surprised the council is not happy to back in this financial climate.

Please let me know if the council is prepared to hear the views of the people of Borehamwood? It is a disgrace that we as a community will not get a say in what happens to our building.
