The forthcoming placing of a commemorative board on the summit of Woodcock Hill, the site of Lord George Murray’s 1807 optical telegraph is a tribute to the fascinating history of the place we live in.
The telegraph, built by the Admiralty, formed part of a vital network of naval communications. It carried the news of the victories at Trafalgar and Waterloo.
The inspiration for the board was a scholarly and interesting talk given by David Taylor of the Borehamwood Museum to the 2008 AGM of Elstree and Borehamwood Green Belt Society. We were so struck by the talk that we decided that something should mark the site of so much history.
The achievement of turning an idea into reality is entirely due to the determination and dedicated energy of Councillors Hannah David, Sandra Parnell and Pat Strack who found the money for the board. On behalf of the community thanks to Hannah, Sandra, Pat and David.
