Have your say on public transport

Well done John Cartledge, a genuine expert practitioner and campaigner for good public transport serving the community (‘Time for action, not discussion’, Your Views, Borehamwood & Elstree Times, January 22).

Readers should know that the Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council runs a body called the Transport and Road Safety Forum, which brings together bus operators, councillors at three levels of local government and other interested community groups.

People who care need to ask what the forum is doing about threats to bus services and need to mobilise at the next meeting.

As a regular bus user and former member of the forum, I shall be back there as an individual to press the view of the “man in the street”.

Some good things have happened in public transport, such as the extension of free bus travel to pensioners and an increase in frequency of inter-town university bus services.

The isolation of villages such as Letchmore Heath is deplorable when not everyone drives or wishes to drive.

The Tory government in 1986 was to blame for privatising the buses in the first place.

Nevertheless, supervision of contracts should be tougher as buses provide a vital social service and save the environment from polluting and congesting car traffic.
