I would like to respond to M Hughes who has attempted to work out the average daily number of miles travelled by Hertfordshire Constabulary’s fleet of vehicles in the letter headed ‘How do they do so little mileage?’ (Your Views, October 24).

The correspondent’s calculation was based on data supplied in a statement by the force, which unfortunately contained a small but significant error.

Our statement said that the force’s 650 vehicles had travelled a total of “11.75million miles over the last three years” when it should have said “11.75million miles every year over the last three years”. Therefore, M Hughes’ resulting average of less than 17 miles travelled per day per vehicle is much lower than the real average.

We would like to apologise for any confusion caused. The number of vehicles in the constabulary’s fleet is continuously managed to make sure officers have the necessary transport to conduct their duties and keep the county safe, while also ensuring the best value for money for the taxpayer.
