Regarding the online article on the police putting the wrong fuel in their cars (“Careless police officers in Hertfordshire spend £8,000 filling up cars with wrong type of fuel”, www.borehamwoodtimes.co.uk October 14).

I am quite amazed the police car fleet of 650 cars — covering 11.75 million miles over a three-year period — means each car averages less that 17 miles per day, or a little in excess of 6,000 miles per year. How do they keep their daily mileage so low?

One would assume the cars are bought (leased or whatever) to be out and about 24 hours a day doing police work.

This cannot be so if on average they are all doing such a low mileage.

Perhaps they could reduce costs by only having 325 cars doing a whopping 34 miles each per day?
