Late afternoon on Sunday, August 17, we were caught in a horrendous traffic jam on the M1 (northbound) on our way home from a long day out. We have since learned that the cause of this problem was a festival at the Hare Krishna Centre in Aldenham. We understand that the motorway tailbacks were more than six miles in both directions and that all the local roads were also jammed. The motorway signs (visible only once one was on the M1) said Junction 5 was closed but there was no advance warning of the jams ahead or indeed that there was a festival, thus giving motorists prior notice to avoid the area. Accidents that usually cause tailbacks are, of course, sad and very unfortunate but this celebration was planned well in advance.

In Stanmore, when there is a religious event at the Hindu temple, there are plenty of notices about this and giving warnings of traffic problems.

I have no issue at all with any religious or other events or celebrations, but when such a huge following is expected from around the country more care should be taken, more notice should be given and police advice and indeed co-operation should be heeded.

It is not acceptable that families, unaware of such events, are held up in this way when proper alternative arrangements can be made, such as Park and Ride provisions. Notices in local papers and/or leaflets can also be distributed around the areas.

I do hope that the organisers will heed this and take the appropriate action next time. Otherwise it could be that local feelings could be aroused, which nobody wants to see.
