People drinking in a pub had a shock when the landlord stripped and had his chest waxed for charity.

The Waggon and Horses, in Watling Street, held a charity fun night to raise money for the Herts Air Ambulance on Tuesday.

But daredevil landlord Rob Hutchings decided to go the extra mile to encourage people to donate cash.

The smooth-chested 35-year-old said: “I was really nervous beforehand, but thought it would be a bit of a laugh and a great way to raise money for the air ambulance.

“It was really painful and the next day it was a bit sore. We had a really big audience which made it even more daunting but I just tried to grin and bear it.

“It is funny looking down at my bare chest now – it has not been like that since I was much younger.”

Crowds of people gathered in the rammed pub to catch a glimpse of a hirsute Mr Hutchings shudder through pain.

Strips of wax were auctioned off for £5 apiece and the daring audience were given the furry task de-hairing him themselves.

And the end of the evening, one brave spectator donated £10 for the chance to rub oil on his sore chest.

Mr Hutchings added: “It was hilarious, everyone was laughing and it created a great atmosphere.

“My waxing feat raised around £70 for our cause so I’m thrilled with how it went.”

A charity auction also held on the night raised an extra £340 for the air ambulance service, which is the mayors charity.
