What's On - What to do

Teenagers set up charity website

SIX young students have set up a new website in order to make donating to charity easier.

The 18-year-olds, who have all just completed their A-levels, came up with the idea a year ago and have been working on the website ever since.

The website, www.whichcharity.org, aims to make it easier for donors to make an informed decision about charities they want to support.

Louise Sopher, founder and creator of the website who lives in Common Lane, Radlett, said she wanted the site to offer succinct and in-depth information on a range of charities, large and small.

She works with five other people including systems administrator Gideon Pyzer, marketing managers Adam-Ragol Levy and Charlotte Abrahams and researchers Yael Meyer and Joelle Zane.

Miss Sopher said: “I just had this thought that if I wanted to give to charity, who should I give it to? There are so many charities out there and it's hard to work out what all their aims are.”

One of the main problems Miss Sopher encountered was searching for information on charities via search engines.

She said: “When you look up a charity on Google, it doesn't give you information on what the charity actually does, especially in relation to other charities. Which Charity allows people to look more specifically at what each of the charities do.”

So far they have had positive feedback from all the charities involved. “Generally charities are really interested and when they ask our age they're really impressed by the site,” Miss Sopher said. The website is run on a volunteer basis with any profits going towards the maintenance and upkeep of the site. So far there are 40 registered charities listed on the website, but Miss Sopher and her colleagues are aiming for more in the next few months. They are also hoping for increased visitors to the site.

“In future we want to be able to help charities more,” said Miss Sopher. “We want to keep them as informed as possible about how many people are visiting the site and what comments they are leaving. Anything to help.”
