Borehamwood pool to close during summer for maintenance work

THE swimming pool at a Borehamwood leisure centre will close for the summer for £70,000 of maintenance work to be carried out on tiles.

The Venue's swimming pool, in Elstree Way, will be shut from July 25 until September 1.

Swimmers have been advised to use pools in Potters Bar or Bushey.

Hertsmere Borough Council's finance and property portfolio holder, Councillor John Graham, said the tiles surrounding the pool needed to be replaced.

He said: "It is one of the quietest times of year for the pool as schools won't be using it for lessons and competitive swimming has a break in the summer.

"We understand it means residents won't be able to take advantage of our free swimming scheme during this time but they can still use pools at Bushey Grove Leisure Centre and the Furzefield Centre in Potters Bar.

"Children and young people in Borehamwood who might have been planning to use the pools during the summer holidays can also swim at these centres and get involved with a variety of fun and exciting activities.

"We appreciate that some users will be disappointed about the temporary closure, but we weighed up the pros and cons of closing the pools at this time and believe it is the best option."

Barry Ellis, general manager at Hertsmere Leisure, which manages the council's sport and leisure facilities, added: "Although the pools will be out of action, we offer lots more at The Venue including gym facilities, exercise classes, soft play area and creche as well as a range of children's activities.

"We appreciate that no time is a good time to close the pools but we fully support the council in organising the work to improve the pool facilities.

"The work is necessary to ensure the pools remain of the highest standard to meet our customers' expectations and to comply with heath and safety requirements."

We have just been awarded FREE swimming, are HBC going to compensate us for travel? Petrol/Bus fares? At least our children could ride there bikes to the venue, or is it case of they want us dig down in our pockets in this economic climate and pay for the other activities within the borough?

I do believe that the secondary school that houses the majority of the children doesn't use the pool during term time anyway.

Typical of this town!

Well done brilliant timing, wouldn't it have been better to shut it down in the winter.Who actually makes these decisions id like to shake his hand....

Unta, you make a point of saying you get swimming for free, but then expect the council (i.e us the taxpayer) to foot the bill for your kids to get on a bus??

What is it with this country everyone thinks its their 'right' to sponge what they can from the government??

Why don't you put your hand in your pocket and pay for your own kids? Shock horror! If it costs that much, maybe you shouldn't of had so many kids huh...

As for the swimming pool closing for repairs, what would you rather have, keep it open and then a kiddie gets hurt from faulty equipment??? You seem to be the sort of person that would be straight onto the compenstaion lawyers...

Some people!

There is never going to be a good time to shut the pool for repairs. During term times the schools use it -stopping this would not be good as these lessons may save a kid's life one day. In the winter it may be the only place some people can exercise- my mum can't cope outside in the cold weather.
Maybe it was thought that people would have more time to travel to other pools with their kids in the holidays.
If you can't get to the other pools why not take your kids (and a football) to the park for some exercise - we do as we can't afford to swim very often.

My main complaint about this pool is how shoddily it was built in the first place. I remember that the lights gave problems in the first year it was open and the tiles should not have worn out this quickly.

I am in complete agreement with Ibwgh. I am also pleased that the pool is going to be repaired.

It clearly states in the article that although there is never going to be a good time to close a pool, the decision has been made to ensure that the pool is of the best quality and is fully health & saftey compliant.

There are two other pools to use within a few miles... Unta, if you think that you deserve for us tax-payers to fund your child's travel then you are livin gon another planet.

Also, the pool has been open 10 years now, I think a little bit of time for essential repairs is wekk deserved!

i'd be more impressed if the money for free swimming was spent on improving school swimming lessons.

My son went for about four months only, just as he's getting it, they stop!

I was planning on taking him twice a week to the Venue over the summer.

Not wrong there Sandra i have voiced this with the primary school on more than one occasion. whatever happened to width, 20 metres, length & 100 metres etc. Going back to the good old days of the 70's/80's
