Film editor visits Elstree Film Festival

FILM editor Terry Rawlings attended as a special guest at the launch of the fourth annual Elstree Film Festival on Monday.

Mr Rawlings, 75, lives in Borehamwood, and participated in a question and answer session for the audience watching animated film Watership Down, at the Reel Cinema, in Shenley Road, Borehamwood.

It was the first of a week of films which also included The Rebel, The Dark Crystal, Wonderful Life and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Mr Rawlings was the film editor for Watership Down, made in 1978, and was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Chariots of Fire, made in 1981.

He has also received four BAFTA nominations and a lifetime achievement award from the American Cinema Editors in Hollywood in 2006.

Mr Rawlings said: “I joined the film Watership Down because of its director Martin Rosen who I’d worked with before in Women in Love. I think one of the reasons the film has lasted so long in people’s minds is that it is animation and that never dates.

“Animation may be more sophisticated nowadays with the way they do it but like other films such as Bambi, Watership Down still stands up and the characters are wonderful creations.

“The themes about endeavour and survival in the film are still of great interest. I had a very enjoyable time on Monday at the film festival and go every year to see the films.”

Bob Redman, secretary of Elstree Screen Heritage, said: “It was a pleasure having Terry there and the event went really well.

“It is always good to have someone on hand who knows about the film we are watching and can provide insights that only they could have. We are looking forward to the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom film at the cinema, which will be fun for all the family.”

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom will be shown at the Reel Cinema, in Shenley Road, tonight at 8pm (doors open at 7.30pm). Tickets can be booked at Fairway Hall on 020 8207 1382 or online at reelcinemas.co.uk To learn more about Elstree Screen Heritage log on to elstreescreenheritage.org
