Time capsule buried at Borehamwood school

A TIME capsule was buried at a Borehamwood school last Friday to be opened in 25 years time.

The capsule was buried at Hertswood School, Thrift Farm Lane, outside what is to become The Ark Theatre.

Builders started work on the theatre at the school in October last year.

Work is due to be completed this autumn with an official opening scheduled for November.

Headteacher Jan Palmer Sayer said: "I don't know yet what wonderful events will happen at the theatre but I am hoping in 25 years time whoever digs this capsule up and looks back at this thinks this was a great idea.

"The theatre is on time and the whole thing is on schedule. We are all desperately looking forward to the gala opening of the theatre later on in November."

Hertsmere Borough Council leader Morris Bright said: "In 25 years time I hope to see everyone back as we are now. Time capsules are very interesting as they get a glimpse of what's going on at a particular time and when it comes to open it you get to realise what was happening in that era.

"I think the mixture of material that went into the time capsule is very interesting as it focuses locally on the area and it is very important to know what this area and the community is like.

"Many believe over the years as the areas of Borehamwood and Elstree have grown and become more intensified the sense of community has somehow been lost and I hope this community theatre will serve to to bring the community back together again."

Mr Bright talked about a crisis meeting held this time last year on the future of the theatre.

He added: "It took a lot of effort from people, some of whom are here today and some not, to ensure this project did remain. By working together as a team we are where we are now."

Hertsmere MP James Clappison said: "It's a great privilege and pleasure to be here to join you for this ceremony.

"This capsule will prove beyond doubt there are an awful lot of things going on at this school, which I'm sure will still be going on in 25 years time.

"It's a school where things are really happening at the moment."
