THERE was a distinctly German feel in the air at Fairway Hall last night, as Borehamwood and Elstree celebrated the link with their twin town.
Borehamwood and Elstree Twin Town Association (BETTA) hosted a German Evening to celebrate their relationship with the twin town of Offenburg in Germany. With over 120 people attending the event, they had to turn people away at the door who wanted to join in the German frivolity.
Martine Eni, event organiser, said: “We had to refuse people on the door which was a first. The event was really amazing, I was shocked. The event was to promote relations between our German twin town — we had all the German sausages there that I could find in England. We could have done with a much bigger room, it was a really fun night.”
BETTA is also twinned with Fontenay-aux-Roses on the outskirts of Paris and Offenburg in south-west Germany near Strasbourg. Supporting exchanges between pupils, students, sporting, musical and arts groups is the main focus of the association.
The deputy mayor of Hertsmere, Eddie Roach, also joined in the German festivities, which saw a traditional brewer travel all the way from Germany to supply the event with some authentic beer.
The next event will be a concert held in September and will combine a French and German theme to celebrate the links to both of the twin towns.
