Remembrance Day services were held throughout the borough on Sunday in memory of men and women who gave their lives in conflicts around the world.
Services were held at war memorials in Borehamwood, Radlett, Elstree, Shenley and Aldenham. The traditional two-minute silence at 11am marked 90 years since the end of the First World War.
Hertsmere's mayor, Councillor Sandra Parnell, said she believed there were more people at the Borehamwood parade in Shenley Road than any year previously.
She said: “The crowd had a tremendous amount of respect for the occasion and the service was done beautifully with the Rev Tim Warr.
“John Brown, of the Borehamwood Royal British Legion, also gave a wonderful speech.
“It was great to see people of all faiths and ages there to commemorate such an important event.”
Following the parade, Mr Warr led the service at All Saints Church, in Shenley Road with Reverend Richard Leslie, team vicar of St Michael's and All Angels Church, in Brook Road.
Mr Warr said: “It really seems that every year more and more people participate in the remembrance ceremony. It is important to remember like this and it was a delight to see such a cross-section of people there.
“We remember not just about the past but also consider what younger people may be feeling about loved ones in present wars.
“One thing I noticed this year was that there were young men on leave from service attending the parade.
“This shows how immediate conflict is to the community and how it affects us by having local people in active service.”
Poppy Appeal organiser Carol Denbigh said that the size of the Borehamwood parade reflected the feeling of the crowds as they gathered in Shenley Road.
She said: “It was a big parade and it all went very well on the day. It was great to see people of all ages gathered there to remember.
“I think young people especially feel the need to participate in this event as they are more aware of conflicts around the world. It is of course a bit more special this year with the 90th anniversary.”
Up to 300 people joined the crowd and parade, which was led by Mrs Denbigh and her husband Len.
She added: “We were very proud to be leading the procession and glad that everything went to plan on the day. Hopefully this will be continued in years to come and will be as important for future generations.”
