Child poverty and the economy were just two the subjects at the Labour Party conference most likely to affect the residents of Borehamwood, according to the leader of Hertsmere’s Labour group.

Councillor Ann Harrison travelled to Manchester to join fellow party supporters at Labour’s annual conference from Saturday to Wednesday.

Speaking from the event on Wednesday morning she said: “The conference is always a fun experience. For me, the highlight was [Prime Minister] Gordon Brown’s speech on Tuesday, which was very good.

“As a councillor of the Cowley Hill ward I was very interested to hear that a lot more things would be made available for younger children.

“Enshrining the eradication of child poverty in law is a great step and will mean a lot to people in the poorer areas of Borehamwood.

“The Government’s investment in the Sure Start programme has seen direct results, with the new children’s centre due to open very soon in Borehamwood.”

With worries about the current uncertain economic climate, Ms Harrison also said the Prime Minister’s proposed efforts to stabilise the country’s financial situation would have a positive impact on Borehamwood.

Before rushing off to her final event, a debate on health, she said: “I felt that what Gordon Brown had to say in his speech was a bit of a revelation and I think it puts his stamp on the leadership of the party.

“What he spoke about will be very good for the country.”

Not that it matters what Gordon Brown has to say, as he's on his way out any time soon..

He could promise eradication of all taxes for all the good it will do his failing Labour party.
