It was Carry on at the Studios when actress Barbara Windsor was commended for her work at a plaque unveiling on Sunday.

More than 100 guests gathered at Elstree Film Studios in Shenley Road, Borehamwood, to honour the career of Ms Windsor, 70, including television presenter Dale Winton, Radlett resident and EastEnders actress Pam St Clement and comic actor Stanley Baxter.

They were joined by Elstree and Borehamwood town mayor, Councillor Farida Turner and Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Sandra Parnell.

The accolade was presented to Ms Windsor by director Jeremy Summers who worked with her at the studios in 1963 on the film Crooks in Cloisters.

She has played the role of pub owner Peggy Mitchell in BBC drama EastEnders, which is filmed at BBC Elstree Studios in Clarendon Road, Borehamwood, for 14 years.

Barry Burnett, Ms Windsor’s agent and friend, said: "Barbara was over the moon to be honoured in this way. She felt in her element being back at the studios and was thrilled to have a plaque in her honour. Her vitality never ceases to amaze me as she spent two hours talking with people and signing autographs.

"Working in the area for EastEnders has been a fantastic experience for her and so she was very happy to be recognised in this way. I think the next thing for her is a damehood."

Paul Welsh, entertainments officer for Elstree and Borehamwood town council, said: "Having Jeremy there to reveal the plaque was a lovely surprise for Barbara as this was the first time in 45 years that they had met."

The event included a compilation video of EastEnders clips and a question and answer session with Ms Windsor.

Mr Welsh said: "There were about 130 people there and she chatted with everybody as much as she could. Barbara is a very bubbly, upbeat and energetic person so the whole event was a lot of fun and she seemed to thoroughly enjoy herself.

"She has been at EastEnders for a big chunk of her career. She was known for her Carry On films and the soap came along as a great opportunity for her and through it she became a more respected actress."

The studios presented plaques to honour the careers of actor and director Bryan Forbes in April and actor Christopher Lee in June.

Mr Welsh added: "The presentations this year have been made to a variety of people. It shows that the studios attract a lot of different types of people."
