Couple honoured at Queen's garden party

A former Shenley councillor and his wife joined guests at the Queen’s Garden Party this week after being nominated for their service to Hertsmere.

Rodney and Angela Saunders were chosen to attend the event after being put forward by leader of Hertsmere Borough Council Morris Bright.

Mrs Saunders is the chairman of Hertsmere Neighbourhood Watch and has worked to develop the community facility and her husband was councillor for the Shenley Ward for eight years, until last May.

Mr Bright said: "Mr Saunders and his wife have contributed a great deal to the borough. In order to extend our gratitude to them both we thought this was an appropriate way to thank them. I am glad they enjoyed their experience."

Following their visit to Buckingham Palace, Mrs Saunders said: "It was a day to be remembered, a once in a lifetime experience. The gardens were beautiful and we had a very elegant tea with cucumber sandwiches and cakes and the weather was glorious. I feel very honoured to be chosen to go."

Mr Saunders added: "It was absolutely brilliant, a one-off."

Each council has the choice to nominate up to four representatives to attend the garden party. Mr and Mrs Saunders were joined by Sajida Bijle, the council’s director of resources, and her husband.
