Armed police were called to a quiet street this afternoon after a 'substance' was thrown in a man's eyes and a woman suffered puncture wounds to her arms and abdomen.

Police in numbers descended on Scrubbitts Park Road in Radlett at 3pm today.

A block of flats in Scrubbitts Square was cordoned off.

The woman, aged in her 40's, is not thought to have life threatening injuries at this stage. Both she and the man are receiving medical treatment.

All parties involved in the incident are believed to know each other.

Armed officers were seen searching the area along with a police dog.

A police helicopter was also circling the gardens.

Police officers are carrying out door to door enquiries.

At least ten police cars were seen rushing to the scene and a police scientific services unit arrived later.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police were called at 3.03pm today to reports that a woman and a man had been assaulted at an address in Scrubbitts Square, Radlett.

"The woman, in her 40s, had suffered puncture wounds to her arms and abdomen and the man, in his 30s, had a substance thrown in his eyes.

"The woman’s injuries are not thought to be life-threatening at this stage. Both she and the man are receiving medical treatment and a scene guard has commenced at the property.

"All parties involved in the incident are believed to be known to one another. A number of officers are currently at the scene conducting enquiries in order to establish the exact circumstances around the incident.

"They are being supported by officers from both the firearms and police dog units."
