A councillor has called for improvements at a "deadly" road junction.

Barnet councillor Rohit Grover, for Hampstead Garden Suburb, has called on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to improve pedestrian safety on a stretch of the A1 operated by Transport for London.

There have been 11 serious crashes since 2010 and the death of an elderly woman earlier this year on the Kingsley Way/Ossulton Way/A1 junction, which is out of control of Barnet Council.

Cllr Grover put forward a motion for debate in full council on October 31 which called for TfL to consider how the junction could be improved after the all-red phase of the traffic lights was described as "inadequate to non-existent".

He said: "We called for an urgent meeting with TfL back in April following the tragic death of an elderly lady who was knocked down by a vehicle at this junction.

"That meeting didn't take place for three months, at which we were told by TfL that 'political pressure' would be required for improved traffic calming measures to be implemented, given their concerns over the impact on bus schedules.

"My motion was passed unanimously so I now call upon the Mayor to consider all options, including a longer all-red phase at the Kingsley Way/Ossulton Way/A1 junction where traffic from all sides is stopped, an improved pedestrian crossing facility, or speed cameras for this stretch of road generally."

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: "The Mayor is committed to improving safety for all road users and his walking and cycling commissioner is speaking with TfL about Market Place in light of the concerns of the local community.

The speed limit has been reduced from 40mph to 30mph and TfL is due to analyse recent speed survey results to help determine what improvements could be made."
