MPs from the borough have called on Parliament to support reconciliation in Cyprus.

Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, and Matthew Offord, MP for Hendon, have called on the Minister for Europe Alan Duncan to support negotiations and reconciliation in Cyprus as the 43rd anniversary of the invasion of Cyprus arrives on July 20.

Ms Villiers and Mr Offord, president and Parliament chairman of Conservative for Cyprus, have said Cyprus deserves to be a"modern and efficient state" without need for foreign military presence.

Recently talks between Mustafa Akinci, president of Northern Cyprus, and Nicos Anastasiades, president of Cyprus, broke up without a settlement, which Ms Villiers and Mr Offord said was not the end of efforts to join the sides together.

Ms Villiers said: “It is a tragedy that Cyprus has been divided for 43 years, causing distress to many, including those who lost their homes.

"Of course there is great disappointment that negotiations which looked so promising have not delivered a resolution.

"But although the two leaders have not yet been able to reach an agreement, there is still strong support for resumption of a process aimed at reuniting Cyprus at long last."
