Morrisons has recalled a meat product after finding it was infected with a bug that can lead to meningitis.

The chain has recalled 150g ready-to-eat peppered beef slices after the Food Standards Agency said they could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The bug causes flu-like symptoms such as high temperature, muscle ache, pain, chills, sickness and diarrohoea – but in severe cases, the infection can lead to meningitis.

Listeriosis is responsible for more deaths in the UK than any other food-borne bacteria, such as salmonella.

And some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, such as over 65s, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.
