Barnet Council is trying to clamp down on disobedient drivers to make roads safer.

Plans have just been approved to move Moving Traffic Contraventions enforcement to 14 new sites across the borough, as well as more schools through 2017.

This will involve using CCTV to assist traffic enforcement and catch out offences, already used at almost 60 locations in Barnet since last April.

It will be used to find out people who drive past no entry signs, park on school zigzags, block yellow box junctions and exceed weight or width restrictions.

A number of significant roads along the transport network in and out of central London run through Barnet, including the M1, M25 and A406.

Chair of the environment committee Cllr Dean Cohen said: “Protecting children is one of our biggest priorities, and ensuring the roads around schools are kept safe is absolutely vital to achieving that.

“Already, we’ve seen an improvement in people’s driving habits with the number of motorists complying by not parking on yellow zig zags around schools increased by 67 per cent.

“Increasing the number of sites allows us to target specific areas where we know there is a particular problem around road safety and congestion, and move on once people start complying with the law.

“By improving road safety, traffic congestion and air pollution in this way we know we are making a real impact on residents’ lives.”
