A woman whose mother and dog died within six weeks of one another is urging people to train dogs for deaf people.

Martina Henchley, who lost her mum and dog last year, said volunteering to train a hearing puppy helped put a smile back on her face.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf people, a Hertfordshire charity, is urgently recruiting “puppy socialisers” across the region.

Ms Henchley said: “Last year I lost my beloved dog and wonderful Mum within six weeks of each other. I thought I was okay until the winter came – without a reason to go out, I just became sadder and sadder. It was the following March when I saw the advert for Puppy Socialisers.

“Grant, a yellow Labrador, arrived at the end of April and I have been smiling ever since.

“I love being busy and doing something useful and I just love being a part of the Hearing Dogs family.

“I would definitely recommend puppy socialising for Hearing Dogs – it gives you an amazing insight into what it is like to own a dog and you feel so proud to be helping a charity.”

Anybody with a car, secure garden and time to train a puppy is urged to apply.

Jo Ellam, Hearing Dogs' puppy training instructor for Hertfordshire, said: “Our volunteers are an integral part of the work we do at Hearing Dogs. If you live in Hertfordshire and are looking for something new to do this year, then why not give something back and care for some lovable life-changing puppies along the way?

“All of our volunteers are fully supported by members of staff and become a part of this wonderful, happy community. It really is like a big family and there is so much to gain.”
