A group of friends and family jumped decided to leap out of a plane in memory of a nine-month-old boy who died last year.

Harvey Mayhew was only nine months old when he died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), more commonly known as cot death, in June 2015.

A year later his dad, Tom, and a group of friends took to the skies and leapt from a plane to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

When Harvey died the family took him to Great Ormond Street Hospital for the post-mortem and they have now decided to continue to raise money for the hospital each year.

Harvey’s mum Natalie Howard, 32, of Burghley Avenue, Borehamwood, said: “We are so proud of Harvey and everything he has done.

“Harvey is still here and we are doing stuff that we have never done before in all his name and memory.

“There was nothing wrong with Harvey. We put him to bed and he did not wake up.

“We plan to keep raising money on his anniversary and we are already planning our next adventure.”

According to the NHS website SIDS is rare and it is unknown why some babies die suddenly or for no apparent reason.

According to Ms Howard, she said SIDS is more common in baby boys than girls but she is unsure why that is the case.

So far the family and friends have raised more than £3,000 for the hospital all in the name of Harvey and all four who took part in the skydive have never done anything like it before.

Gemma Caruna, 33, one of the skydivers, said: “It was an amazing experience. I am terrified of heights but it was amazing.

“You do not feel like you are falling. It only lasts seven minutes and you are falling around 120mph in the first bit.

“It goes so quickly. The reason we have done this is for Harvey. Great Ormond Street donated T-shirts for us to wear of the day.”

Ms Howard and her family and friends decided to do the skydive as it is the quickest way to earn the most money.

Ms Howard, however, was unable to take part in the skydive as she is pregnant but was not overly certain she would have done it in the first place.

Laura Savoy, head of community events at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, said: “We would like to extend a huge thank you and well done to Harvey’s friends and families who took part in this daring challenge.

“This is just one of the ways the family have raised money for The Harvey Mayhew Brighter Future Fund for Great Ormond Street Hospital, helping to make a difference to the lives of seriously ill children from across the UK.”
