Children at a Shenley nursery have been learning about the work that firefighters do each and every day as part of International Firefighters Day.

The children at Busy Bees Nursery in Shenley met with firefights on May 4 and were able to dress up and find out more about the life saving work.

Throughout the day the children learnt about fire safety and how to stay safe at home and at nursery.

Nursery manager Zara Habib said: “It’s important that we instil fire safety at an early age and teach them how to be safe to avoid emergency situations.

“We want to teach them about the job that firefighters do and the risks that they take each day just by going to work.

“International Firefighters Day is the perfect time to really send the message out about what it is to be a firefighter and teach the children about fire safety in a fun and memorable way.

“We learnt about what it’s like to be a real life firefighter – trying on the kit, using the hose and being able to see inside a fire engine.”

Children also got involved in a wider discussion about the many different people who are there to help – from nurses and doctors to police and coast guards.

They made their own firefighter identity cards with their photos, wore helmets and practiced their mark-making skills.
