DUMPED rubbish is causing neighbours to feel frustrated with the lack of waste collection in the area.

Mark Sockett, 59, of Bullhead Road, Borehamwood, who has lived there most of his life, says he is angry at the council, who he claims refuse to resolve the rubbish issue at the back of the shops on Manor Way, in Borehamwood.

Mr Sockett says he has complained to Hertsmere Borough Council on numerous occasions but they have said it is a private road.

He said: “It’s not just our problem, it is everyone’s problem. If that is what the council want people to live in, what does our council think about the people of the community?

“The houses are currently occupied by a number of residents who do not seem to understand the rules.

“The problem is that they come and go with lots of goods that they get rid of but they don’t take it to the tip like the rest of us.

“Rubbish is dumped there every night and the local town council should clean it and not leave it there. It’s a constant problem that doesn’t get fixed.”

The land is owned by an external landowner and the issue with waste disposal is not under the jurisdiction of the council.

Cath Shepherd, corporate communications manager at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “We can confirm that this is private land and we have no power to require removal of waste from that land if it was put there without the landowner’s consent unless there is a rat infestation or the waste is particularly dangerous.

“We have had previous contact with the landowners who are aware of this position and they have, on a number of occasions, cleared up the area.”
