Pupils across Borehamwood have been awarded for their "exceptional" work in the community.

Elstree and Borehamwood Rotary Club visited 12 schools during the past week to present school children with certificates as part of their annual rotary awards.

Based on the rotary motto of “service above self”, the awards recognise pupils who have shown acts of kindness and selflessness to others.

Club secretary David Clout, 74, visited Meryfield Community Primary School, in Theobald Street, on Friday, July 17 to hand out awards.

Mr Clout, who lives in Radlett and has been a member of the club for 19 years, said: “Every year the children come up trumps. These youngsters really have been exceptional, for worrying about the greater needs of the community and supporting those who need extra help.

“I get a great deal of satisfaction out of presenting them. It gives me a great deal of pleasure meeting these young people who show they care about their fellow human beings.”

A former teacher, Mr Clout added: “Our society is based on volunteering. If they all stopped tomorrow, our country would grind to a halt.”
