Children were taught how to glide through an obstacle course in wheelchairs to raise money for charity.

Pupils from Meryfield School, in Theobold Street, Borehamwood, took part in the Wheelpower relay challenge last Wednesday.

They raised £600 for WheelPower, which gives schoolchildren the chance to play a Paralympic sport.

The pupils were taught how to move and manoeuvre a sports wheelchair in teams of six, before competition to get round an obstacle course in the fastest time.

Going head to head, teams had to work their way around cones and under gates.

Year 6 and Year 3 pupils recorded the most impressive scores to top the WheelPower Relay Challenge leader board.

Year 6 teacher Amy Jeffrey said: “We decided to take on the relay challenge to enrich the children's sporting experiences and help them understand the challenges faced by para-athletes.

“By raising funds and awareness in this way we hope to ensure the Paralympic legacy continues and that the fantastic work of the charity is widely publicised in the community. If more people know about the amazing experiences the charity can offer, more lives can be transformed through sport.”

WheelPower’s education and fundraising manager Ollie Moore said: “Wheelchair sport is fun, fast, energetic, and competitive so we were delighted to come to Borehamwood to give Merfyield Primary School this opportunity.

“The money raised will helped WheelPower provide life transforming opportunities for children and adults with disabilities.”
