A founder of a club set up to help elderly people combat loneliness says it can only go from “strength to strength”.

The new Drop In at 96 Shenley Road, Borehamwood, will be held every Wednesday for people over the age of 60.

Although it is still in its early days, those behind the project say they are positive about its future and hope it will continue to flourish.

Clive Butchins, a Borehamwood councillor who is one of the three people running the project, said: “It’s been going very well so far – everyone seems to enjoy it. I haven’t had time to ask people the best thing about it during sessions though as I’ve always been too busy.

“We are hoping that as word gets around we’ll be able to welcome more people to the event and that the building will be packed out.

“I am looking forward to seeing it go from strength to strength.”

The club has also been organised with the help of councillors Pat Strack and Sandra Parnell.

The first session, which was held this week, saw a St David’s Day-themed quiz as well as bingo and a raffle. Borehamwood musician Nick Male and his band also held a sing-a-long.

The club will be held weekly and is supported by Tesco and Care by Us. Refreshments including cakes are provided by Sasha Cappocci, whose son Michael attends the Visually Impaired Club.

Cllr Butchins added: “It’s important to hold events such as this one in the town because when there’s a large population, it’s good to hold activities for people.”

The club was launched after questionnaires were circulated to older people in the community and people responded asking for more drop-in sessions.

Sessions cost £2 per week and there is a £5 joining fee.
