A film society is calling for a street to be renamed to mark the area’s movie heritage.

Borehamwood and Elstree Town Council is considering changing the name of Central Place, off Shenley Road in Borehamwood, to Centenary Place.

Elstree Screen Heritage and First Impressions has recommended the renaming to commemorate 100 years of filmmaking in the area.

The street underwent a makeover last May, funded by the town council, when flower beds were planted and banners put up to remind people of the area’s film heritage.

Bob Redman, secretary of Elstree Screen Heritage, said: “Once we carried out the makeover, we thought why not call it Centenary Place? It’s more welcoming. Even though the centenary’s finished, nothing should stop us reminding people about it. Why not have a permanent reminder?

Mr Redman, who lives in Deacons Hill Road, Elstree, added: “The heritage group is committed to reminding people this is a pretty special place. These are baby steps, but that’s how you get there. It’s a tiny step, but if one person a day notices, that’s progress.”

Borehamwood Times:

The Borehamwood Times asked people what they thought of the idea.

Barry Kodish, 70, a taxi driver who lives in Borehamwood, said: “It’s a good idea, and a good way to recognise the role of the film industry here. There are quite a few famous actors who have come out of this studio.”

Kenny Willmont, 32, lives in Theobald Street, Borehamwood, and works in the Cash Converters shop next door to Central Place.

He said: “I think it would be a smart idea. Why not celebrate the film industry? It’s been very important to this area. It might be a starting point to help people learn about the history of it. It’s a shame the way it’s gone now though, it’s all out of here.”

Ruby Sable, who has lived in Borehamwood for five years, agreed it was a good idea.

She said: “It’s highly relevant to the area, it’s been important to the town. The plaques in the streets are good, so this can only help. Some sort of explanation would be needed though. I wouldn’t notice it if I walked past otherwise.”

However, Michael Keane, 50, also from Borehamwood, disagreed.

“I think they should leave it as it is. It would ruin the town centre. It’s been there quite a while. It’s a silly name. People would get confused if they change the name. It’s bad enough as it is.”

The town council approved the name change at a meeting last night. The proposal will now go to Hertsmere Council.
