League tables showing the performance of 11-year-old primary school pupils in Borehamwood and Radlett have been released.

Figures released by the Department of Education yesterday are based on the number of students reaching set benchmark figures in key stages one and two.

Pupils are assessed in reading, writing and maths and are expected to reach a level four standard in all – with schools required to have 65 per cent of pupils achieving this standard.

The level four 'floor standard' requires pupils to be able to spell properly, use grammatically complex sentences and use joined up handwriting.

In maths, children should be able to multiply and divide whole numbers by ten or 100 and use simple fractions and percentages.

Clore Shalom School, in Hugo Gryn Way, Shenley, topped the tables this year with 100 per cent of its 31 students achieving level four, and 26 per cent of pupils achieving level five.

Headteacher Sheree Oxenham said: "Teaching and learning at Clore Shalom inspires our children to be confident, independent learners and critical thinkers.

"Their teachers put much effort into catering for each child's individual needs and starting points and will closely track their outcomes to ensure they all make good progress.

"Learning is stimulating and fun at Clore Shalom, and I am very proud of all our pupils."

Other Radlett schools with top scores include Hertsmere Jewish Primary School and Fair Fields Primary School, which both achieved 95 per cent of pupils with level four.

In Borehamwood, the top of the table featured Parkside Community Primary School, in Aycliffe Road, and Kenilworth Primary School, in Kenilworth Drive, which both scored 92 per cent.

Only one school in the area was ranked below the “floor standard” target. Saffron Green Primary School, in Nicoll Way, Borehamwood, achieved 57 per cent.

Saffron Green headteacher Linda Storey said: "In June 2013, Saffron Green received a 'good' rating following an Ofsted inspection. In my opinion, league tables do not always tell the full story.

“I am happy with the progress of the pupils’ that this league table refers to. I am pleased to say that their value add scores were 'good'.

“My staff are extremely hard working and I am confident that parents, carers and governors are happy with the education provided at Saffron Green."

Hertfordshire County Council welcomed the results, which showed overall that schools across the county achieved some of the best level four results.

Cllr Chris Hayward, cabinet member for education, said: “One of our main priorities at Hertfordshire County Council is to make sure children get a good start in life.

“These tables show that, once again, Hertfordshire’s primary school pupils are among the best performing in the country at achieving level four in reading, writing and maths.

“Congratulations to pupils and staff at schools across the county, who have worked hard to achieve such encouraging results.”

In a previous version of this story, we incorrectly included Manor Lodge School, in Shenley - which is not included in league tables due to its independent status - in the results. We apologise for any confusion caused.
