An avid fundraiser and keen sportsman raised thousands of pounds for charity in his latest challenge.

Nick Moser, a lawyer from Elstree, raised the money for Hertsmere Mencap after completing the Athens Marathon in four hours and 14 minutes.

The 43-year-old collected a total of £3,000 through sponsorship both online and off for completing the race, which began in the Greek town of Marathon and ended in Athens.

He said: “Where better to run your first marathon than the original route from Marathon to Athens in the iconic Athens Marathon?

"If anyone had met me three years ago or so you would have never believed I would be doing this sort of thing. I’m definitely pushing myself as it is not something I would have ever predicted I would do.

“I’m enjoying the experience much more looking back on it now, but I definitely planning on doing many more in the futue.”

Mr Moser described Hertsmere Mencap as being close to his heart as his brother Richard, 41, is a member of the charity.

Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Carey Keates, said: "I am delighted to learn of Nick Moser's successes in fundraising for Hertsmere Mencap, which is one of my Mayor's Charities.

“Following his sponsored climb of Mount Kilimanjaro last year, which raised £4,000, he has done it again - this time raising £3,000 running the Athens Marathon.

“This is such a worthwhile cause: Hertsmere Mencap is a lifeline for so many with learning challenges, and the more money which can be raised, the more effective the charity will become. My congratulations to Nick, and to Hertsmere Mencap."

Asked what his next tough challenge would be, Mr Moser said: “My next challenge is to find a parking place in Shenley Road."
