Hundreds of people lined the streets as a charity rickshaw made its way to Elstree Studios.

As part of this year’s Children in Need live show, which was broadcast live from Elstree Studios on Friday evening, ‘Team Rickshaw’ rode through Borehamwood’s Shenley Road to mark the end of their Salford to Walford challenge.

The five teenagers, supported by the presenters of the One Show, rode 450 miles through the harsh November weather taking in landmarks including the Peak District village of Flash, the UK’s highest village.

Along with One Show presenter Matt Baker, who cycled alongside the rickshaw, the team included 16-year-old Matthew from Derbyshire, 17-year-old Flo from Wales, 16-year-old Jess from Northamptonshire, 18-year-old Carolina from Tottenham and 20-year-old Alex from Buckinghamshire.

Carolina had been selected for the challenge following her involvement with the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice in Barnet, a project funded by BBC Children in Need.

She said: “It was incredible. I have never been to Elstree Studios before and it was amazing going backstage – it was really fun. People were handing us money as we walked down Shenley Road, and across the country.

“Noah’s Ark is such a small charity and to be able to give back to them not just with money but with the publicity has been incredible. They have been a part of my life for the most difficult times so it is amazing to be able to help them.”

Hundreds of people lined the streets as the team pedalled their way down the road to the studios, cheering their support and adding their donations to the charity buckets.

David Ramsden, BBC Children in Need chief executive, said: “The One Show Rickshaw Challenge is very special event. At its heart is an amazing team of young people who help to unite the UK in making a real difference for young people.”

Families and children also enjoyed having their photos taken with Children in Need mascot Pudsey Bear, who followed the rickshaw through the town.

During the live show, it was announced that more than £2.3 million was raised by the team during their challenge - with the One Show announcing last night that the current total is £2,565,281.
