An athletics club is appealing for donations to save it from closure.

Borehamwood Athletics Club relies on entry fees from the annual 10K race it holds every June to subsidise places for its weekly activities.

But after nearly 60 years, Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council has refused to pay for marshals to man the race - meaning the activities the club runs for children aged five and up may have to be cancelled.

Organisers are now appealing for businesses to come forward and sponsor the race to pay for marshalling.

It is also hoped that parents of children who attend the club will volunteer as marshals, which are required by law for the race to go ahead.

Organiser and club secretary Pauline Poole said that sponsorship would make a huge difference to the club’s future.

She added: “I’m sure people in the community want to make sure children and young people in Borehamwood have something to do with their time that is productive and fun.

“Without support, if the club has to close we won’t be able to start it up again and we need the help of the community to keep it going.

“The 10K event is a really important part of community spirit in the town, and people always really enjoy the event. We just need help to save it and save our club.”

The fun run has taken place at the Hertswood Centre, in Potters Lane, since 1960 and the £12 entrance fee helps subsidise places at the athletics club.

More than 150 people aged 17 and over take part every year and the event is one of the main highlights of the town council’s festival fortnight, held every June.
