Householders will fight “inconsiderate” plans to allow a new restaurant to serve alcohol opposite their homes at a meeting tomorrow.

Restaurant chain Frankie and Benny’s, in Borehamwood Shopping Park, Theobold Street, is applying for a premises licence at a hearing at Hertsmere Borough Council’s civic offices, in Elstree Way.

Those living in nearby Chatsworth Close, however, are angry that the restaurant will be able to serve alcohol and play loud music from 8am until midnight on Monday to Thursday.

During the weekend, the outlet hopes to play loud music and stay open until 11.30pm.

In a letter to the licensing committee, a doctor who has a two-year-old and a five month old child, said: “We are very concerned about the level of late night noise this will create.

“We deliberately chose to live in Chatsworth Close as it is a quiet cul-de-sac which escapes the traffic of Theobold Street, and has until now been undisturbed by retail units with limited opening hours.

“We feel a late night music and alcohol licence would disturb our children and jeopardise our current way of life.”

Another letter, written by a group of people, said: “We believe granting this licence would be inconsiderate to the local neighbourhood and specifically, impact dramatically on the daily lives of the residents of Chatsworth Close.”

The group claims half the houses have bedrooms overlooking the restaurant which belong to children and teenagers, and the noise would disturb their sleep and affect their school performance.

The letter added: “The noise of traffic entering, leaving and parking in the shopping park until 12.30am on a daily basis will be a disturbance, especially when the weather is warmer and the windows are opened.”

Frankie & Benny’s has said it will build acoustic lobbies, use sound limiting devices and insulate the building to ensure minimum disruption to people in the area.

The meeting will be held at 10am tomorrow (Tuesday October 14).
