A youth ambassador had a party conference in a spin as part of a campaign stunt.

Peris Thuo, of Theobald Street, Borehamwood, is a youth ambassador for the campaigning organisation ONE, which wants to end extreme poverty and preventable diseases.

She joined 15 other ambassadors in Birmingham last week at the Conservative Party conference to perform an eye-catching stunt for ONE’s trillion dollar scandal campaign.

The campaign is calling on MEPs to make governments and businesses both transparent and accountable in the way they spend their money in African countries.

She said: “Every year, a trillion dollars is lost from state funds in African countries through tax evasion, money laundering and embezzlement.

“This is a staggering figure that could go towards healthcare, education, food and towards Africa becoming self-sustaining, which is what we want. It is something that can benefit everyone.”

Originally from Kenya, the 24-year-old has worked and volunteered abroad, including climbing Kilimanjaro to raise money for schools in Tanzania, but said she had an “amazing day” pulling off the stunt at the conference.

All 16 ambassadors donned launderette-style aprons, and spent the day "laundering" money in a big washing machine the group had hand-made.

Interested members from the conference were given information about what they could do to help ensure transparency, along with being handed free chocolate coins to remind them of the problem of laundered money in Africa.

The UK Youth Ambassadors programme was set up earlier this year and brought 25 young people from across the country together to launch ONE’s six month campaign, but has now come to an end.

Miss Thuo said she has thoroughly enjoyed her time on the campaign and added: “It was a great day and a fantastic way to end the youth ambassador programme for 2014. I have met some amazing people and been part of making a change globally and helping end poverty.

“I can't wait for my next experience.”
