Happy and exhausted runners took part in a family fun run during the weekend.

Continuing their 50th anniversary celebrations, Hertsmere Mencap hosted the family friendly fun day out in Aldenham Country Park on Sunday.

Children as young as three took part in running the 1.5km track, along with a number of both children and adult runners who ran the 5km route around the lake.

A number of Mencap members also took part in the day’s activities, including Guy Lewin and Chloe Osborne who enthusiastically took part in the run and completed it to great cheers from other members as they reached the finishing line.

Families and friends took the opportunity to walk around the lake and reservoir to ‘warm down’ after the runners had finished the course.

Organiser Richard Summers, along with his team from Hertsmere Mencap as well as helpers from Rotary Clubs in both Radlett and Elstree and Borehamwood, all pulled together to create a  family friendly and entertaining atmosphere in the country park.

Paul Moser, Hertsmere Mencap Chairman, said: "Runners thought it was the best Fun Run they’d taken part in and Mencap members thoroughly enjoyed the event."

The Borehamwood Brass Band kicked off the event with their performance, which included heralding the runners arrival to the finishing line, while a juggler and a fairy mingled with the children and families who had taken part in the day-long event.

Hertsmere Borough Council Mayor councillor Carey Keates and Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council Mayor cllr Pat Strack attended the event to give out prizes to race winners, while the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Stuart Nagler, joined in the fun to fire the starting guns.
